New Website coming in July

I finally broke down and asked GoDaddy to revamp my website. I get so many emails and calls and keep telling them. I am already busy enough. But, with the COVID Crisis, it has impressed upon me how transitory everything is.

Did you ever imagine you would be wearing a mask in public, hoarding toilet paper, getting stressed going grocery shopping, and telling your father, "No, you absolutely can't go out!" Crazy.

I am at that weird stage where I am starting to plan for (Jim's) retirement, during which we always planned to travel. Now, who knows?

But, I am going to go ahead and start beefing up my online work now rather than later. So make sure and check back in with me at www.life-works.info to see the bright shiny new me!

I'd love to hear from you! Comment below....

Resumes Before and After

I just created this Dropbox Showcase of resumes I have rewritten and designed!  I have been working on a way to display these and this new feature seems perfect - let me know what you think!

                                                     Resumes Before & After

If you are like my other clients you worked hard on your resume, and there are no terrible red flags, but I could make you stand out from other candidates. Your approach is likely typical to most job seekers/resume writers – providing more of a bulleted laundry list of duties rather than communicating what you can do for your current or new employer, depending upon your goal for the resume.

Hard and soft skills

Even my most seasoned executives often overlook the importance of including soft skills in their resumes, biographies, and profiles. This is your opportunity to share a bit of your personality and make your resume come alive! If you are looking for work, including soft skills will make you stand out from other candidates.  If you are looking to grow your network, land more clients or do more business, soft skills are what make the difference between you and a competitor.  Here is a straightforward graphic that spells out the difference between soft and hard skills. Both are equally important!

Use a Job Search Schedule to keep yourself from losing it

Sticking to a job search schedule can really help you get results from your job search.  One of the biggest complaints I hear from job seekers is that they get little or no positive feedback for all of the time they spend job searching.  They typically are spending their valuable time applying online to positions...only!

This can be very disheartening, to say the least!  Not only do employers not often provide positive feedback - often they don't even have an auto-responder.  A job seeker may think their resume is being reviewed when it might never have been received.

Follow-up is a great way to get both positive feedback and ensure your resume has been received. You may even get to schedule an interview. Varying your job search activities will keep you from feeling as if you are hitting your head against the wall on a daily basis.  Click the link above to download your free Job Search Schedule.

Practical tips for getting started with LinkedIn

LinkedIn can seem mysterious or even  daunting when you first start using it - there are a lot of features that you can use to your benefit.  But, if you have just created your profile or  are revisiting LinkedIn after initially setting up a profile you never revisited, you may be thinking what now?  (if you need help creating or optimizing your LinkedIn account, let me know!)

To get started you don't need to use every feature or spend hours everyday on LinkedIn. A few minutes each day will result in staying more current and more connected without too much trouble  Here is some basic info on how to use LinkedIn:

To benefit from LinkedIn you will really need to start being more active and share information frequently – even if it is just sharing something someone else posts.  I always make sure to post lots of stuff my clients can share with their “connections” just to stay on their radar; it also helps attract new contacts as they find you via your similar posts.

For example,
you might share an article on career management from me one
of your connections may share it
That second may be someone who
has an interest in managing his or her career
and would like to do business with you
but only found you via me, who has nothing to do with your industry!

Looking for a new job can be stressful even under the best of circumstances.  When you have experienced a life changing event, such as a downsizing or work related injury, job search can be especially challenging.  You are already experiencing a major life event which is compounded by the fact that there is little information and even fewer practical resources to help you…. REVIEWS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This book is a great tool for those who face the challenge of returning to the workforce, particularly after a life-changing injury. Career change can be a stressful time for anyone but for those who face the daunting task of overcoming physical barriers, the process can become overwhelming. This book provides assurance to those going through a similar situation and delivers a framework for the overall job search process. The author is very experienced and knowledgeable in this area and provides a simple guide for those who need a lot of instruction and guidance but also for those who are seeking some general advice. I would recommend this tool for anyone who faces the challenge of today's labor market and especially for those who will be overcoming new physical challenges.
