Job Search Tip of the Day Practice Interviewing

It is imperative that you practice interviewing if you want to get the job!  Start with writing down answers to common interview questions.  Focus on presenting yourself and your desire for the job in the best possible light. Temper this by being aware of what may be important to the employer and communicating that you have what he or she is looking for.  Be clear and concise in your answers.

Here are a few questions to get you started:

Perfect your elevator pitch, Name job, qualifications, history, job you are seeking:
Practice answering questions based on your résumé
Practice your reason for leaving statement
Tell me about yourself
What are some of your greatest achievements?
What are your capabilities and job desires – how will you talk about them?
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  10?
Why should I (employer) hire you?
List questions you plan to ask an interviewer

It is important that your answers don't come off as stiff or rehearsed. Practice answering the common questions with a friend, colleague, career professional or on Video.  Many new computers and laptops (not to mention smartphones) come with built in video cameras. Take advantage of this technology to make sure you have the best interview ever.

If you have gaps in your work history or are making a career change it is especially important that your answers are positive and convincing.  With the competition in today's labor market, you cannot afford to leave a shadow of doubt or a shred of concern with the employer.

After you have practiced interviewing with the common interview questions, have someone ask you questions based on your resume.  You should be able to give concrete examples for any knowledge, skill or ability presented. Remember, you may only get one chance to impress the employer - get it right the first time!
