Often the experiences we have are influenced by how we see our world....

Always remember you choose how you see our world....

You are not alone. Never forget that.

Avoid or recover from a Frankenstorm: Ask your loved one to butt out of your job search
It is hard to be unemployed and looking for work. It is hard not only for the job seeker, but for loved ones. This is especially true if the unemployment is unplanned, unexpected and/or unwanted. Most of them are.
The dynamics at home will quickly transform and appear to take on a new rhythm that, at first, may not seem too bad. But, if the job search takes longer than expected, or if any party doesn’t feel it is going well, then it may not take long for emotions to boil up into a Frankenstorm.

HOW DO YOU STAY ACTIVE IN YOUR JOB SEARCH?

"I'm tired." I hear from many clients.  The conversation goes something like this:

Client: I'm tired.
Me: You're tired.

Client: Yes, tired.
Me: Tired of....?

Client: Everything....
Me: (Silence)

Client: This....
Me: (Silence)

Client: Housework....
Me: (Silence)
Client: Homework....

Client: Driving the kids to their activities....
Me: (Silence)
Client: Having to come up with meals....

Client: Not having insurance....

HOW TO FIND UNADVERTISED JOBS

Photo from: http://www.morguefile.com/creative/ManicMorFF
One of the first challenges a job seeker faces is how to find job openings, or find employers that may have job openings. Too many rely heavily, if not exclusively, on online applications. These openings are known by, and applied by, so many job seekers that it reduces the chances of any one job seeker being seriously considered.

Tapping into the hidden job market is the best way to be considered for jobs that are or will be available, but have not yet been widely advertised. This path is not for the lazy! It requires hard and consistent work in identifying employers and/or industries who might be interested in hiring the job seeker.

Research, contact, and follow up are

WHY SHOULD I WORK WITH A STAFFING AGENCY?

One of the many things that I preach to my clients over and over is to register with as many staffing agencies as possible and stay in touch with them.  This is important for several reasons:

Photo from: http://www.morguefile.com/creative/mantasmagorical

  1. Many employers only hire through staffing agencies
  2. Staffing agencies should be considered another source of job openings
  3. Recruiters at staffing agencies can often provide valuable feedback about your match with specific employers
  4. Often, the staffing agencies have insight into what a particular employer is looking for or how to get a "leg up" above the competition
  5. Staffing agencies often provide "Temp to Perm" positions, not just temporary positions (although this may also be a good way to impress an employer)
  6. A recruiter's recommendation of you may carry more weight with an employer than you or your references alone
In short, a job seeker may

What to expect from a visit to the Chiropractor

You may be wondering what to expect from a visit to the Chiropractor.  If you have recently been referred or have decided a Chiropractor might be right for you, here are some things to expect.

Photo from: http://www.morguefile.com/creative/LilJoel
A chiropractor will:

  • Obtain detailed medical history from you
  • Discuss current symptoms and expectations with you
  • Explain his or her education, background and philosophy
  • Explain and demonstrate how he or she treats (using visual aides and/or a chiropractic table)
  • If you haven't had diagnostics such as X-rays or MRI he may request that you do so
  • He or she may provide treatment the first session and should explain it has he or she provides
  • Explain that you may have more symptoms in the near future as your body adjusts or realigns itself
  • YOu might be scheduled for more visits initially - twice a week for example.
CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENTS VARY AMONG PROVIDERS

Chiropractic treatments may vary among providers and depending on preference or your needs, may include:

  • Spinal Manipulation
  • Acupuncture
  • Fitness & Nutrition
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Traction
Here is an article that does a great job explaining the types of treatments and techniques involved in Chiropractic Care.  http://www.joanngentle.com/different-types-of-chiropractic-care-and-treatment-techniques.html

I hope this article helps you understand what to expect from a visit to the Chiropractor.

KNOW THYSELF!

Photo from:   http://www.morguefile.com/creative/hotblack
Whether it is deciding to use an Objective versus Profile Statement, formatting a unique and individual résumé for yourself, or setting a career goal, it is crucial that you know yourself and what you want.

Take a step back from your job search and think about what you do or have done well.  When have you succeeded most?  What have you or do you enjoy most?  What is something you need to work on?  Or, something that you struggle with?

Answering these questions will start you on a forward path that will land you closer to where you want to be (even if you don’t quite yet know where that is)!  It may be difficult to sort through if you have had a lot of (or very few) experiences.  But it is well worth the time and effort.

HOW CAN YOU GET TO KNOW YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU WANT?

If you approach it logically and take a few simple steps you can quickly sort through your experiences to assess you and your unique situation better.

Tuesday Tip October 16, 2012

Make your résumé unique to you and your current career goals

THERE IS NO ONE FORMAT THAT IS GOING TO WORK FOR EVERYONE

Photo from:  http://www.morguefile.com/creative/hyperlux
Typically, I compile information from a client and/or review their existing information:

          1.    Contact information, including photo, logo, or avatar
2.      Skills and Abilities
3.      Achievements
4.      Work History
5.      Education
6.      Groups, professional or community
7.      Presentations
8.      Papers/articles
9.      Certifications/special training

Next it is important to understand the career goal and... Read More: Job Search for the Rest of Us!: Tuesday Tip October 16, 2012

Career Fair - Don't HIre Me!

I am just coming from a career fair, here in Delaware and saw or heard many of the scenarios outlined below.  A few I added from other career fair experiences, but not many!  This is no commentary on Delawareans or those seeking to work in Delaware – I commonly see and hear many of these egregious examples at job fairs I attend across the region.
If you don't want to be hired by attending a career fair:
  1. Bring your child/children (no matter how young, old, cute, well behaved, calm, mature, etc.).  No one, not the children, you, other attendees, or employers will benefit.
  2. Bring your dog… Everyone can hear it barking from the car in the parking lot, including you!  It’s never a good idea to leave your dog alone in the car anyway.
  3. Ask about benefits and raises.  Everyone wants them – this can be discussed closer to the job offer.
  4. Wear knee high stockings with a skirt, even a long one – the split is above the stocking line and clearly visible from behind, in case you wondered.
  5. Tell a recruiter/potential employer that you don't want to “waste” a resume on them – bring enough to waste on every employer there and then some (you don't know from where your next job offer will come yet).
  6. Wear jeans, shorts, t-shirt, muscle shirt or ill-fitting, or bad looking clothing (ask someone whose opinion you care about how you look – they will tell you).
  7. Wear the pink sunglasses to match with your capri’s that have a large embroidered pink flower on the leg.  This is good advice on any day.
  8. Wear perfume or smoke what smells like an entire pack of cigarettes before attending.  Many people are allergic to perfumes and no one likes the smell of stale cigarette smoke.
  9. Leave your glasses at home if you need them to read.  What?  You really didn't think you would have to read anything at the job fair?
In case you were wondering:  I hope this clears things up!
For some positive tips on making the most of out a career fair, you may also want to review the following sites:
